Having tried the Lantern on previous trips to Luxor I was surprised this year to
find it not up to the usual standard, all of which was rather embarrassing
having invited along 4 new friends from our hotel.  After singing the
praises of the Lantern the meal overall somewhat of a mixed bag.  The lentil soup
delicious, sea bass and greek salad acceptable, however, the combo platters
(soaked in too much oil) were hardly touched.  The lamb hot pots were
lovely, but it was almost impossible to get a knife
through both the fillet steaks and the steak on the surf and turf, even though
steaks knives had been provided. The wine and deserts were good. Although
too polite to criticise, it was obvious from the amount of food returned to the
kitchen that our guests were not very impressed with the Lantern. Cost
wise, apart from the 1886 restaurant at the Sofitel Old Winter Palace, the bill
was the most expensive of the holiday at just over 950LE.

Due to the inconsistent quality of the food I am no longer comfortable
recommending the Lantern to friends and colleagues.

“Very good welcome, excellent menu including egyptian dishes. Ate there twice and both nights were really good. more “

“Run by an English lady & her Egyptian hubby. Very friendly, always busy but well organised so if Debbie can’t seat you immediately there’s a comfy sofa to sit on & that’s how I got chatting to some other people & made friends. The food is excellent, with a choice of Egyptian, English & various continental dishes. more “

“The first night’s food was delicious and the chocolate cheescake was even better but on the second night I was unable to have the salmon so had chicken escalopes which were disappointing and my boyfirned had the steak which was also disapponting-it was large but chewy and a bit undercooked, more quantity than quality-Jewel of the Nile’s steak was much… more “

“Visited this restaurant once during our recent stay in Luxor based on trip advisor recommendations. Would not go back! “Went here last week. The area is fairly grubby in Luxor and the bars and restaurants very sub standard. This place was much better. Good portions and excellent choice. Recommend if going to Luxor . more “

“I believe in the motto: “Speak as you find”, the menu at the Lantern includes English & Egyptian food, I tried the fillet steak many times and was good! (Where else can you get this for approx £6?). “Visited The Lantern on my recent trip to Luxor. The restaurant was full when we entered and we had to wait a couple of minutes for a table to be cleaned and re-set, giving us a chance to admire the beautiful decor. The menu offered a wide variety of foods and was reasonably priced. Both meals were generous portions and… more “

“I would say the only thing this restaurant has going for it is the fact that you don’t have to walk far from you hotel. The hospitality and food were the biggest disappointment of the holiday. I have travelled quite extensively and have never felt the urge to review restaurants before, but having done one for the best in Luxor… more “

Restaurant Reviews

After descending a flight of stairs we were pleasantly surprised to enter a
light and airy restaurant, not what we were expecting of a basement
establishment.  The International/Egyptian menu was extensive with
something to satisfy everyone, from typical Egyptian to pizzas and steaks.
Welcomed by friendly staff and we were given complimentary appetisers to
accompany our chilled soft drinks, but sadly the restaurant was extremely quite
and lacked atmosphere. Maybe ok for a quick reasonably priced meal or snack but
not the right place if you want to make an evening of it.

Sharm El Sheikh Holidays

“This restaurant deserves to be in a more prominent position. Were it to be on the Corniche near to Luxor Temple it would be packed all day, every day. Once you’ve made the descent into the basement, you’re greeted by a light, airy restaurant, which is nicely furnished and spotlesssly clean. Ghamal, the owner, is a very gracious host, he… more “

“A warm welcome in a lovely cool restaurant awaits once you go down the stairs. Lovely food at a good price – all food so much better than the hotel rubbish (they really do need to make an effort and put away the oil!). Would recommend to all – be brave and try the local food it is worth it…. more “

“We went down the steps to this resaurant to find an airy spacious place that was clean and well lit.. we were shown promptly to a table and ordered our food, an appetizer arrived which was a nice surprise.. Thats it.. The food arrived i ordered Pizza that was clearly cooked from frozen and was rubbery and devoid of flavour….. more “

“My wife and I had a list of new restaurants to try when in Luxor recently. I have to admit we left this one until near the end of our holiday. We were put off because it is in a basement accessed via an external staircase. We thought it might be gloomy and didn’t want to commit without being able… more “

La Fleur Luxor

Sharm El Sheikh Holidays

Restaurant Reviews

La Fleur is a fine dining restaurant within the 5 star Maritim JolieVille
Hotel.  Offering international gourmet food it’s an ideal place for a cosy
romantic evening meal away from the hustle and bustle of the centre of Luxor. We
didn’t try La Fleur on this occasion (as I plan a return visit with my husband
later in the year).  We did, however, enjoy drinks on the Sherezade Terrace
where we they have some splendid views so don’t forget your camera.

Sharm El Sheikh Holidays

“Situated at the Maritim Jolie Ville hotel. I have eaten at La Fleur a few times now as I stay at the hotel when in Luxor. The restaurant is really another room next to the main eating area of the hotel but is set up nicely with a good decorative order throughout. It has air con and feels more upmarket…. more “

Lotus Restaurant Luxor

The Lotus Restaurant is centrally located within the budget hotel Nefertiti,
with splendid views from the roof terrace over the Luxor Temple, the Souk and
the Nile.

Review will be listed after our return to Luxor next month.

Sharm El Sheikh Holidays

“Located at the rear of the Nefertiti hotel, the Lotus is on the first floor above an internet cafe. Through its windows, diners can view the negotiations in the tourist souk. The food is of fine quality and keenly priced. As always in Egypt, it is safer and more courteous to choose local dishes, so be brave and you will… more “

Metropolitan Cafe Luxor

Worldwide Travel Holidays in Luxor

Restaurant Reviews

I believe the Metropolitan Cafe and Restaurant,
Metropolitan Bowling Club and El Kababgy are all owned by the same people.
Sadly time didn’t allow us to try all these venues so the Metropolitan Cafe and
Restaurant will have to wait until we return next month. We did however try
El Kababgy and could  certainly recommend it for good food, great views
and, in view of location, fair prices.

Miyako Luxor

Restaurant Reviews

Miyako, I believe Luxor’s only Japanese restaurant, is located at
the Sonesta st George Hotel.  Having eaten Egyptian/English/Indian food for
the last couple of weeks we decided to treat ourselves to something totally
different. The food was delicious, particularly my partners
seafood teppanyaki.  The bill,
however, was
quite expensive (only to be expected for a

hotel restaurant) but was nevertheless good value for money.

Sharm El Sheikh Holidays

“We ate twice in Miyako. We arrived late and were tempted in by the waiter. We had gorgeous crab sushi and tepanyaki. The chicken is beautiful and the garlic and friend rice were mouth watering. The cook encouraged us to join in too! A lovely way to start to holiday! On our second visit we had a similar menu but… more “

“We had dinner a few times here while we stayed in Luxor and enjoyed it. The food is good and the decor is stunning. Restaurant Reviews

Having thoroughly enjoyed a meal at 1886 the last week we decided to give La
Corniche a try this week. (Both restaurants are located within the Old Winter
Place).  This lovely hotel has a beautiful ambiance and we began the
evening with an enjoyable drink in the Royal Bar.  Sadly La Corniche
Restaurant, offering international cuisine, was a little disappointing. The food
was acceptable, the staff attentive but the atmosphere seemed to lack the charm
and splendour associated with the rest of the hotel.  Maybe we were
expecting too much after being thoroughly spoilt dining at 1886!
