Having tried the Lantern on previous trips to Luxor I was surprised this year to
find it not up to the usual standard, all of which was rather embarrassing
having invited along 4 new friends from our hotel. After singing the
praises of the Lantern the meal overall somewhat of a mixed bag. The lentil soup
delicious, sea bass and greek salad acceptable, however, the combo platters
(soaked in too much oil) were hardly touched. The lamb hot pots were
lovely, but it was almost impossible to get a knife
through both the fillet steaks and the steak on the surf and turf, even though
steaks knives had been provided. The wine and deserts were good. Although
too polite to criticise, it was obvious from the amount of food returned to the
kitchen that our guests were not very impressed with the Lantern. Cost
wise, apart from the 1886 restaurant at the Sofitel Old Winter Palace, the bill
was the most expensive of the holiday at just over 950LE.
Due to the inconsistent quality of the food I am no longer comfortable
recommending the Lantern to friends and colleagues.

“Run by an English lady & her Egyptian hubby. Very friendly, always busy but well organised so if Debbie can’t seat you immediately there’s a comfy sofa to sit on & that’s how I got chatting to some other people & made friends. The food is excellent, with a choice of Egyptian, English & various continental dishes. more “
“The first night’s food was delicious and the chocolate cheescake was even better but on the second night I was unable to have the salmon so had chicken escalopes which were disappointing and my boyfirned had the steak which was also disapponting-it was large but chewy and a bit undercooked, more quantity than quality-Jewel of the Nile’s steak was much… more “

“Visited The Lantern on my recent trip to Luxor. The restaurant was full when we entered and we had to wait a couple of minutes for a table to be cleaned and re-set, giving us a chance to admire the beautiful decor. The menu offered a wide variety of foods and was reasonably priced. Both meals were generous portions and… more “
“I would say the only thing this restaurant has going for it is the fact that you don’t have to walk far from you hotel. The hospitality and food were the biggest disappointment of the holiday. I have travelled quite extensively and have never felt the urge to review restaurants before, but having done one for the best in Luxor… more “
